Viedma Glacier, El Chalten

4.5
Hike on Viedma Glacier, part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Flowing into the western end of Lake Viedma, the glacier ends in a cliff rising 40 m (131 ft) over the lake and creating an impressive natural sight. The coloration of the glacier, which appears to be striped black and white, is the result of debris collecting in the ice as it moves across the land. Book a guided walk on the glacier with one of the operators providing specialized gear for glacier hiking, or view it on a boat tour. We made the trip with the Patagonia adventure company, with which already we had made it, in October 2014. We wanted to repeat the experience, this time accompanied by our family (in-laws, in-laws and nephews). We had a guide for others friendly, Mateo, who at all times and with very good predisposition, responded to all the concerns that we had, and proving to be a great expert in the area, much of its geography, customs, flora and fauna. The lunch was at the Refugio Laguna Cóndor, ex Fitz Roy Adventure Camp. It was very gratifying to see that not fell the quality attention, both in the quality of the previous bite of cold cuts and entree and dessert. At about 2 pm, the shuttle service led to the quay to take the catamaran that makes the tour of Lake Viedma, until you get close to the wall of the glacier, at a safe distance, since landslides are frequent. The Viedma glacier is monumental. If they already know and marveled with the Perito Moreno glacier, this won't fail to surprise. The company doing this tour is serious. Met all, routes and schedules. The only thing objectionable, was that at the time of booking, in the Patagonia adventure page, they mentioned a promotion for families of 4 members, in which there would be a child of 8 years, were 3 and the minor was free of charge. Speaking with the operator Verónica Franco, did mention the promotion posted on the page, and his emphatic response was "Yes... but not". The Agency officials should take into account this situation, either to comply with the conditions that they promote on your website, or to make the necessary modifications in it, not to fall into what is known as "Misleading". Except for that situation, the service provided was impeccable. You can't miss it is.

The walk on the Viedma glacier was one of those life experiences that you mark and change; that take you to assess the nature and the importance of enjoying it and living it. An investment in experience that is worth widely.

Less imposing than the Perito Moreno glacier is however worth a visit. The boat is walking in the middle of huge icebergs. Only, not to be missed

Where to stay in El Chalten

Thanks to the city's small size, almost all of the accommodation options in El Chalten are within easy walking distance of anything of note in town. Most "hotels" are in fact cozy alpine-style lodges catering to international visitors, and tend to be on the pricier side due to their upscale amenities. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the many campsites outside town, though weather here can be harsh. During the high season in January and February, you'll need to book at least a month or two in advance as lodging fills up fast. Keep in mind that El Chalten depends heavily on seasonal tourism for its income, and many hotels and lodges, particularly smaller, family-run affairs, close down during the winter off-season. On the flip side, many of those that remain open offer lower winter rates.
