Laguna Capri, El Chalten

4.8
Hike from El Chalten to the green-blue lake of Laguna Capri, which awards visitors with picturesque views of forested hillsides and jagged snowcapped mountains. The scenic landscape and the scents of nature invite you to continue trekking, while the singing of birds and the calmness of water lure you to repose on the soft sandy shore of the lake. The water is usually too cold for swimming, but you can wade through the shoals on warmer days. Bring plenty of fresh water, snacks and sandwiches for a picnic, and a waterproof coat if you plan to camp overnight. To visit Laguna Capri on your trip to El Chalten, use our El Chalten trip app .

  • We came upon this lake while returning to El Chalten from Mount Fitz Roy. The trail bifurcates and we took the right hand trail, which eventually follows the edge of this lake. It offers great views o...  more »
  • We did the trail of Laguna Capri, the most recommended for non-hikers as I. Even so, I had difficulty in some stretches well steep and narrow, but without risks. It was very windy day, despite the Sun, but at the end of the 4 km the triumphal arrival to Laguna, woodpeckers on the path, in activity.

  • A very good view of el Chalten, of quick and simple access lace, 2 hours from the village. It has a camp free, get up early in the morning to watch the sunrise from there I recommend.

  • It is a beautiful spot featuring camping area and a Bella Vista of Mount fitz Roy, in winter must be careful with the way because it is very slippery and may be dangerous.

Where to stay in El Chalten

Thanks to the city's small size, almost all of the accommodation options in El Chalten are within easy walking distance of anything of note in town. Most "hotels" are in fact cozy alpine-style lodges catering to international visitors, and tend to be on the pricier side due to their upscale amenities. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the many campsites outside town, though weather here can be harsh. During the high season in January and February, you'll need to book at least a month or two in advance as lodging fills up fast. Keep in mind that El Chalten depends heavily on seasonal tourism for its income, and many hotels and lodges, particularly smaller, family-run affairs, close down during the winter off-season. On the flip side, many of those that remain open offer lower winter rates.
