Glaciar Piedras Blancas, El Chalten

4.9
#6 of 8 in Nature in El Chalten
A peaceful hike through the forest takes you to Glaciar Piedras Blancas, a stunning glacier and lake. Part of the Glacier National Park, the heavily wooded area makes a perfect setting for a long but scenic trek along the rushing Rio Blanco. When you reach the lookout point, you can admire the icy cascade descending from a Mount Fitzroy cliff. Keep your eyes peeled--you might even see chunks of ice detaching from the glacier and falling into the lake below. Very quiet track to be made until the mirador of the Piedras Blancas Glacier. I went and came back for the trail starts at Hosteria El Pilar in less than 3 hours. The hosteria was closed, so I left the car in the driveway, on the side of the road, increasing the path. Beautiful place even on a cloudy day. Road to hosteria has many loose rocks and requires attention, especially if there is water on the road. Details for fauna: there are "wild" cows on the trail and beautiful woodpeckers in the trees.

I wasn't directly, get to see it from a viewpoint 3 lagoon road and the landscape is incredible, calculus that get there must be more exciting still

More or less halfway between Hosteria El Pilar and Poincenot camp, after an hour and a half (approx) running from pillar, almost by surprise appears the viewpoint. Beautiful glacier, small compared to other monsters in the South, but worthy of being admired. Close to this vantage point I could see a Magellanic woodpecker, with its unmistakable red head. To admire and refuel while it goes from pillar to L3. Recommended. Another thing is go to the glacier, along a path of irregular and unstable born later, on the other side of the White River, and that requires good physical condition and extreme caution by danger (national parks not allowed).

Where to stay in El Chalten

Thanks to the city's small size, almost all of the accommodation options in El Chalten are within easy walking distance of anything of note in town. Most "hotels" are in fact cozy alpine-style lodges catering to international visitors, and tend to be on the pricier side due to their upscale amenities. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the many campsites outside town, though weather here can be harsh. During the high season in January and February, you'll need to book at least a month or two in advance as lodging fills up fast. Keep in mind that El Chalten depends heavily on seasonal tourism for its income, and many hotels and lodges, particularly smaller, family-run affairs, close down during the winter off-season. On the flip side, many of those that remain open offer lower winter rates.
