  • Our most beautiful hike to El Chalten. Worked hard with the last km which requires a big effort but worth it, beautiful views of the Fitz Roy and a turquoise lagoon! Amazing!

  • Although we didn't climb Mount Fitz Roy, few people do, we had our best day in Argentina going to see this fantastic mountain. We walked to it from El Chalten, having followed the Rio Blanco from El P...  more »
  • In this area is the Laguna de los Tres a must. Hiking all the time is 6-9 hours depending on the route variant of and condition. Tip: Pilar start the hike at the Estancia (with taxi from El Chalten reachable). Reduces the total time to an hour and passes on views of the glacier. Return then via the normal route to El Chalten. The last km has it all and takes an hour. With about 500 meters to overcome - part of larger blocks of stone. Because many tourists are traveling, it sometimes to Wartereien and jams! Top highlight pur arrived. Must be seen easily, if you are in this area.

Where to stay in El Chalten

Thanks to the city's small size, almost all of the accommodation options in El Chalten are within easy walking distance of anything of note in town. Most "hotels" are in fact cozy alpine-style lodges catering to international visitors, and tend to be on the pricier side due to their upscale amenities. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the many campsites outside town, though weather here can be harsh. During the high season in January and February, you'll need to book at least a month or two in advance as lodging fills up fast. Keep in mind that El Chalten depends heavily on seasonal tourism for its income, and many hotels and lodges, particularly smaller, family-run affairs, close down during the winter off-season. On the flip side, many of those that remain open offer lower winter rates.
