  • We joined the big Ice Tour. 1/2018 current tour cost 6,200 pesos. It is with about 40000 Yen national park entrance fee of 500 pesos. Tour was reserved in advance. On the day around 7:00 will you come to meet me at the front of the hotel. Trek 30 minutes (time is specified at time of booking) then get a car for two hours, before the Perito Moreno glacier in 1 hour free, boat, 20 minutes, Woods moving, glacier trekking 4 to 5 hours, came back again, ship and forest → It's come back to El Calafate 19 staff. Glacier trekking time is divided into Spain and English guides, small groups of around 10 to go trekking. Tough physical work but has become the ban for the elderly and the rain and the wind blew cold. It is a little disappointing when it's sunny on the other hand heat. It is recommended to bring food and warm clothing firm, to participate. I'll be back and start treks from 6 hours in the car, I can't go to the toilet. Big eyes will come wrapped in there final destination in Blue Lake on the ice. On the way there are many attractions such as waterfalls and crepes. I think big is better, rather than trekking with llamas have physical strength and budget.

  • It is a high value and worth still experience, they have the experience very well organized and they are careful of security. The glacier is spectacular. If a group is worthwhile to do so without transport.

  • We did the mini trekking and had a great time! Shuttle bus from our accommodation was on time and worked well, and the tour guides were great. Definitely an experience worth doing!
  • On time hostel pick up. Everything well organized (we were on Mini trekking tour). Amazing place. Two guides per group - they did great job on the glacier. Very proffesional.
  • Went on the mini-trekking experience to Perito Moreno to see the glacier. Unfortunately didn't have a chance to do the Big Ice trek as it was low season (ends end of April). A shuttle was provided in the morning to drive to the park where we were received by a tour guide that provided us the necessary info. Guided tour on the ice (crampons included). There is a little shelf-storage that is on the site to set your things down so you don't have to carry it with you on your trek. BRING FOOD + WATER since lunch is not included). I would recommend hiking boots on this trek because the crampons dug in to my ankle when I wore trainers (still doable). GLOVES ARE MANDATORY -- nowhere is this info provided but upon arrival they told us that gloves were required to do the trek, if you don't have any they do lend you some (though if possible bring your own as others might forget as well and there may be a shortage). Would recommend this company. Can be found on the main street in El Calafate
  • Big Ice was a Big Disappointment for us. For the money you pay, it is very sad you only walk boringly on the flat and around the edges of the glacier, very close to the forest. The guides (Carlos and Jorge) were so pro safety that it felt we were being taken by the hand on every step, it was very lame. There were no uphills, no valley circling, no cave exploring. Everything was plain boring from start to end, walking on ice so close to the forest it was always covered in dust and dirt from the hills. The reaso for this, as they said, it's because the edges of the glacier only move 50m per year, whilst the central section moves 600m per year and is very unstable. Don't expect to explore the middle of the glacier, because you won't be taken there. And don't expect to walk among cracks because it won't happen. If you are a no-life, go and spend your savings here, but if you are reasonably active, avoid this excursion altogether and just go to Perito Moreno Park and enjoy a normal day viewing this wonder from the distance, it will be worth yuor while. I cannot possibly reccommend Big Ice to anyone. Perhaps if price was 1000ARS instead of 4000, then it would be worth the while, but at the current trade it is a point blank robbery.

Where to stay in El Calafate

El Calafate offers abundant lodgings, from budget-friendly guesthouses to four-star hotels. Top beds sell out well before the peak season (October to April, and especially December to February), so it's a good idea to reserve in advance if you plan to visit during that time. Spontaneous travelers without prior arrangements can look for youth hostels, many of which are located just outside of town. To stay in comfort without burning a hole in your wallet, consider vacationing here during the low season, when most hotels offer deep discounts.
