Landmark Tourist Spot
View the historical monument of Piramide de Mayo (May Pyramid), in the heart of Buenos Aires' Plaza de Mayo. Inaugurated in 1811 on the anniversary of the May Revolution and renovated in 1856, it represents the oldest monument in the city. Admire the imposing 18 m (61 ft) obelisk, on top of which stands a statue representing Liberty by French sculptor Joseph Dubordieu. The ashes of Azucena Villaflor, founder of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo--which searched for "disappeared" relatives--are buried at the monument's base. Where to stay in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires offers an impressive selection of budget-friendly and mid-range lodgings, as well as pricier, more luxurious options for visitors who don't mind splashing out. Good rooms are scattered across town, but your best bet for economical hostels remains San Telmo, a neighborhood on the edge of downtown. For boutique establishments and international five-star hotels, head to Palermo, Recoleta, or Puerto Madero, upscale neighborhoods drawing the majority of foreign visitors.
