View the historical monument of Piramide de Mayo (May Pyramid), in the heart of Buenos Aires' Plaza de Mayo. Inaugurated in 1811 on the anniversary of the May Revolution and renovated in 1856, it represents the oldest monument in the city. Admire the imposing 18 m (61 ft) obelisk, on top of which stands a statue representing Liberty by French sculptor Joseph Dubordieu. The ashes of Azucena Villaflor, founder of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo--which searched for "disappeared" relatives--are buried at the monument's base. • This was the first monument of the city, created in 1811 to celebrate the first anniversary of the may revolution. In the beginning, it was clay and wood, then in 1856, was refurbished as it is today. Around the pyramid, on the sidewalk, you may see white painted scarves. These are the symbols of the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo.
