El Museo Casa Carlos Gardel, Buenos Aires

3.7
Fans of Argentine tango music should head to El Museo Casa Carlos Gardel to find out more about the life of this nationally loved genre's most famed figure. Situated in Gardel's old house, the museum traces the singer's life through photos, records, and newspaper clippings, in addition to giving a glimpse into his day-to-day life. While an interesting diversion from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires, the memorabilia here will be best appreciated by big fans of Gardel's work; general visitors may find it of less interest. • For those who are not American, a brief note: in the city of Buenos Aires, the supply used to be a poor area, dedicated to the central wholesale market of fruits and vegetables (from 1893 to 1984). Since 1999, the area has been transformed completely, thanks to the Abasto shopping centre. Carlos Gardel (known as El Morocho del Abasto), famous singer, lived and grew up there. This cozy Museum, opened in 2003, used to be the House of Gardel. He bought that House for his mother, Berta in 1927. The place is full of memorabilia belonging to the thrush, as Gardel was also known, in reference to his wonderful voice. There are also many records, letters, clothing and newspapers that attest to the success, life, movies, trips, performances and Gardel's death. It is a typical "sausage House", in very good condition. Pay attention to the details, as for example the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. It is good to get a feel for life at the beginning of the 20th century, when the city of Buenos Aires was receiving immigrants from the devastated Europe. There is a guided tour available. You can listen to their songs while you enjoy the Museum. Congratulations to the people in charge of the Museum. Enjoy it very much!

  • A place for Gardel's fan. The museum is quite small but it has a good collection of Gardel music and movie. Entrance is pretty cheap (30pesos as of March 1st, 2018)
  • There is a show room with really bad audio Other than that really nice place Good lighting And good guides
  • This is an interesting place for Gardel's fans
  • The museum seems to be under utilized; the sequence in which they start you with is a little off.
  • I was expecting more...
