El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires

(4.7/5 based on 13,000+ reviews on the web)
Browse an extensive collection of books in a spectacular setting at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a bookstore housed in an early 20th-century theater. The theater first opened in 1919, and was later converted into a cinema. Today bookshelves replace seats in the stalls and galleries. Ascend to the top floor for a bird's-eye views of the floor below. Look up to admire the intricate ceiling frescoes. The theater boxes remain, converted into reading nooks where you can peruse a book before you buy. On the stage and backstage area, enjoy a coffee or empanadas at the onsite cafe. Although the store primarily stocks Spanish-language books, they also carry a wide range of English-language titles. • A great library that comes out of the conversion of an old theatre in library. A point of reference in Buenos Aires culture, café to read while you take a coffee and spaces enabled to read part of his books.

  • The store is very pretty, with a variety of diversified securities, worth the visit, but the prices are for tourists (perhaps English). It is very likely that in one of the other 466 bookstores of Buenos Aires, is most affordable prices, I couldn't prove it.

  • It's alright. No doubt building is really cool but I don't feel that alone justifies a 5 star review. As an actual bookstore this place isn't all that amazing. Overpriced.
  • A book store that was once a theater. It is fun to go inside and try to imagine how it was back then. Great coffee as well.
  • Beautiful bookstore in an old theatre. Totally worth a visit. Also sit down at the coffee shop for a short read and a quiet coffee...
  • Fantastic building with plenty of books... no English ones though. Perfect for any bookworm.
  • Amazing. A place to go and get lost in books. They have all kinds, genders and formats of books. Definitely one of the "must place to go" in Buenos Aires.
