El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires
(4.7/5 based on 11,000+ reviews on the web)
Browse an extensive collection of books in a spectacular setting at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a bookstore housed in an early 20th-century theater. The theater first opened in 1919, and was later converted into a cinema. Today bookshelves replace seats in the stalls and galleries. Ascend to the top floor for a bird's-eye views of the floor below. Look up to admire the intricate ceiling frescoes. The theater boxes remain, converted into reading nooks where you can peruse a book before you buy. On the stage and backstage area, enjoy a coffee or empanadas at the onsite cafe. Although the store primarily stocks Spanish-language books, they also carry a wide range of English-language titles. • Glad at least once entering this huge library. It has armchairs where you can browse books. I recommend it!

  • This is the place to find your book especially in Spanish plus all the music you cannot get in the USA
  • If you are for sure to visit Recoleta, an old theater that works like the bookstore, I was delighted with such gorgeous!

  • Best bookstore I have been to. The place is beautiful it is mind boggling how this is a store now. Not only does this creat a surreal and fun surrounding but they also provide seats where you can read books before purchase.
  • The bookshop is gorgeous!! The service at the café isn't super, but it's got a really quiet atmosphere.
  • It's a great library. I find interesting books for myself and to offer as gifts to friends. The venue is rich with local and foreign literature. Prices vary by titles and categories, and from cheap to costly books. It's possible to seat and read there, on the carpeted floor or at the indoor café. I love it.
  • Se respira cultura, se respira mística.
  • Loved it!!! Beautiful place, amazing collection. Staff could be a little more smiles less frown, but the experience is very good.
