El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires

(4.7/5 based on 13,000+ reviews on the web)
Browse an extensive collection of books in a spectacular setting at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a bookstore housed in an early 20th-century theater. The theater first opened in 1919, and was later converted into a cinema. Today bookshelves replace seats in the stalls and galleries. Ascend to the top floor for a bird's-eye views of the floor below. Look up to admire the intricate ceiling frescoes. The theater boxes remain, converted into reading nooks where you can peruse a book before you buy. On the stage and backstage area, enjoy a coffee or empanadas at the onsite cafe. Although the store primarily stocks Spanish-language books, they also carry a wide range of English-language titles. • Must visit one of the libraries most beautiful and the largest in Latin America. Variety of books, but the highlight is the magnificent view from any of its three floors, since before it was a theatre.

  • I could finally know this great theatre and cinema become beautiful library. Variety of books and music while maintaining the spirit of the original Athenaeum if this were little can take and eat at the bar located on the stage of the theatre!

  • It is always pleasant to visit this libreria.ademas have beautiful facilities we can enjoy the freedom of taking a book from the shelf and read it to taking a coffee break while no one stop us. It is always visited by different indigenous or foreign writers who come to present their books or just to provide enriching lectures for lovers of literature.

  • It's alright. No doubt building is really cool but I don't feel that alone justifies a 5 star review. As an actual bookstore this place isn't all that amazing. Overpriced.
  • A book store that was once a theater. It is fun to go inside and try to imagine how it was back then. Great coffee as well.
  • Beautiful bookstore in an old theatre. Totally worth a visit. Also sit down at the coffee shop for a short read and a quiet coffee...
  • Fantastic building with plenty of books... no English ones though. Perfect for any bookworm.
  • Amazing. A place to go and get lost in books. They have all kinds, genders and formats of books. Definitely one of the "must place to go" in Buenos Aires.
