4.7/5 based on 10,000+ reviews on the web
Browse an extensive collection of books in a spectacular setting at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a bookstore housed in an early 20th-century theater. The theater first opened in 1919, and was later converted into a cinema. Today bookshelves replace seats in the stalls and galleries. Ascend to the top floor for a bird's-eye views of the floor below. Look up to admire the intricate ceiling frescoes. The theater boxes remain, converted into reading nooks where you can peruse a book before you buy. On the stage and backstage area, enjoy a coffee or empanadas at the onsite cafe. Although the store primarily stocks Spanish-language books, they also carry a wide range of English-language titles. • It is located in a busy commercial area on Santa Fe Avenue. Its interior architecture is beautiful, I recommend visiting it.

  • Really beautiful library converted from a former theater! impressive and really great! Behind the big red tent, on the former stage is a cute little bar!

  • The building is beautiful! The idea of turning this theater into a bookstore was really something. Worth the visit but the book variety is not so great as I expected, considering the size of the place...  read more »
  • It's a great library. I find interesting books for myself and to offer as gifts to friends. The venue is rich with local and foreign literature. Prices vary by titles and categories, and from cheap to costly books. It's possible to seat and read there, on the carpeted floor or at the indoor café. I love it.
  • Se respira cultura, se respira mística.
  • A bookstore where the building itself is like a work of art. It seems more of a temple to books then just a bookstore. Staff is happy to help with book or music recommendations. Cafe is a great place to look over your books while enjoying a hot or cold beverage. Highly recommended. Great place to visit.
  • This shrine to literature and culture is overwhelmingly beautiful. With an impressive library, live music friday and Sunday evenings, and a lovely cafe, it's easy to loose your sense of time in El Ateneo.
  • Whenever I'm in Buenos Aires I take up a few hours to get to El Ateneo and enjoy what I consider to be the Gold Standard of Bookstores. El Ateneo operates inside an old Theater building, which is kept in great condition and their coffee shop is on the stage for gods sake! Just visit them and see for yourself. Thinking about wandering the aisles, checking up the current art showing and having some coffee while reading up on random books always brings back fond memories.
