Cemiterio de Recoleta, Buenos Aires

4.4
Must see · Cemetery · Landmark
Admire the 4,691 elaborate and varied vaults of Cemiterio de Recoleta. The mausoleums display a wide array of architectural styles, sculptures, and motifs, from Baroque to Art Deco, many constructed from materials imported from Paris and Milan. The cemetery serves as the final resting place for artists, actors, writers, and Nobel Prize winners, 19 Argentine presidents, and the beloved icon Eva Perón. Although some tombs are protected by the government, parts of the cemetery have fallen into disrepair. While the cemetery can be explored without a guide, having someone to recount the stories behind the different mausoleums can greatly enrich your trip. A visit to Cemiterio de Recoleta represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Buenos Aires travel route planner to plot your vacation.

  • Saw the entombment site of Eva Peron (no not Madonna, the real one). There are huge monuments to mark where important people are entombed/buried.  more »
  • It is an amazing place with so many stories to it that one could spend days listening to them all. It´s a mixture of opulence and suffering, Aristocracy, power and vulnerability. You can feel and...  more »
  • The elite of BA gave themselves this vanity mausoleum. There are no common people in here, we could gather. The elite could open the gates any time they want. For mere mortals like us, it was closed.....  more »

  • Definitely a must see. Beautiful architecture abounds in this cemetery, and it's surrounded by a charming neighborhood. Only negative, its often too crowded at Mrs. Evita Peron's crypt. It's located within a narrow passage way, and tourists just "plant" themselves there. Its difficult to get a glimpse let alone a meaningful picture.
  • Amazing place to visit! Fameous Evita’s graveyard is there! We enjoyed visiting Recoleta! % 100 recommended to visit Recoleta Graveyard! One of the must visit if your in buenas Aires , Argentina! Enjoy your holiday! Best wishes
  • A spectacular cemetery but really needs a guide to get the most out of a visit. Still an interesting spot to wander around in.
  • This is surely a special place. It would be better to get a guide however that's limited. Beautiful resting places. Should maybe charge to get in and that way it could be cleaner. Great stories behind these people and families. A lot of nice things to do in the neighborhoods around. Many great parks etc.
  • Gorgeous cemetery. Despite the small size, you could easily spend half a day exploring it.
