Catedral Metropolitana, Buenos Aires

(4.5/5 based on 5,000+ reviews on the web)
Despite its undoubted importance as a religious landmark, Catedral Metropolitana is best known as the burial site of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's celebrated national hero. You can see San Martin's sarcophagus at a mausoleum inside the church--note the statues of three women guarding the general and representing Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The somber cathedral, which looks more like a bank building from the outside, also contains the remains of other Argentinean war heroes. • When I saw the building the first time didn't believe that possession of a cathedral, because the façade is not the traditional model. Internally you can see several neoclassical details, in addition to a mausoleum in tribute to soldiers of wars for independence.

  • Essential visit for anyone who is in Buenos Aires and admires architectural monuments. The Cathedral with neoclassical style facade contains several Baroque and Renaissance elements in your interior, characteristic of churches of the city. The highlight is the great tomb of general San Martín, maximum icon of independence argentina Chile. The Church still contains surprises as the Blessed Sacrament after the main altar and the ceiling that stands out with the Golden lighting.

  • An enormous cathedral - a very simple yet pleasing visit in one of the places the current pope went to. The entrance is completely free, but you can buy souvenirs in its shop.
  • grand cathedral at playa de mayo. one of my favourite places to visit in buenos aires
  • Very beautiful cathedral, near the Subte and by the way you have to take care with homeless people.
  • A beautiful building, it has a lot of history and it's definitely worth a visit.
