Catedral Metropolitana, Buenos Aires

4.5
Despite its undoubted importance as a religious landmark, Catedral Metropolitana is best known as the burial site of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's celebrated national hero. You can see San Martin's sarcophagus at a mausoleum inside the church--note the statues of three women guarding the general and representing Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The somber cathedral, which looks more like a bank building from the outside, also contains the remains of other Argentinean war heroes. The Metropolitan Cathedral is not flamboyant like the Saint Patric, NYC, but invites you to explore it, struck by the soldiers guarding the remains of General San Martín

I gave the luck here and be starting a mass, the details of churches in gold, the altar and music transmit a huge peace, well worth the visit.

Amazing building, very pretty and well cared for. There was the changing of the guard at the time of our visit, sensational.

A beautiful and recently well maintained cathedral steeped in the history of Argentina. It is also an active place of worship.

A beautiful and historical place to visit. Awesome structure. The only downside is that every thing is marked in Spanish and there is no guide for the Tour or help. A definite must see place

Beautiful! Look at the ceiling and the floor (entirely covered with Venetian mosaics). Don't forget to visit the San Martin's mausoleum

Where to stay in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires offers an impressive selection of budget-friendly and mid-range lodgings, as well as pricier, more luxurious options for visitors who don't mind splashing out. Good rooms are scattered across town, but your best bet for economical hostels remains San Telmo, a neighborhood on the edge of downtown. For boutique establishments and international five-star hotels, head to Palermo, Recoleta, or Puerto Madero, upscale neighborhoods drawing the majority of foreign visitors.
