Fort James, St. John's
(3.6/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
Built during the 18th century to guard the city from a possible French invasion, Fort James offers a glimpse into the past as well as sweeping views of the surrounding harbor. Although it was once armed with 36 cannons and a barracks accommodating 75 men, today the citadel has dwindled to a handful of cannons, a power magazine, the ruins of old buildings, and the foundation walls. Due to lack of maintenance, grass grows quite liberally throughout the grounds. Still, you can enjoy views over the bay and combine a visit here with a swim or stroll along the nearby beach. Add Fort James and other attractions to your St. John's trip itinerary using our St. John's vacation route planner.

  • This place would make an excellent restaurant/Cafe if it were refurbished to its former glory. Brilliant and commanding views to the natural harbour.
  • Just loved Fort James, BUT why doesn't the government or who ever do something about looking after their history. The place has just been left and yet it so beautiful and could be opened up and visito...  more »
  • One of the few spots that have completely intact cannons. and the view at sunset is the most beautiful you will see in Antigua

  • Antiguans are not mantaining the ruins of this fort and it is falling apart. It is amazing though, the good state of the canyons. A lot of history lost in this fortification
  • Easily accessible (we drove straight up and in) and ample places to park. The ruins have an eerie but tranquil atmosphere and lots to see (views, buildings, cannons) and explore. Free to enter and park.
  • Great scenery, wonderful for sunsets.
  • Free, wild, enjoyable hike!
  • Fort James near St. John's, Antigua, dates from 1739. Admission is free.
