Fort James, St. John's

3.5
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in St. John's
Built during the 18th century to guard the city from a possible French invasion, Fort James offers a glimpse into the past as well as sweeping views of the surrounding harbor. Although it was once armed with 36 cannons and a barracks accommodating 75 men, today the citadel has dwindled to a handful of cannons, a power magazine, the ruins of old buildings, and the foundation walls. Due to lack of maintenance, grass grows quite liberally throughout the grounds. Still, you can enjoy views over the bay and combine a visit here with a swim or stroll along the nearby beach. • This spot is a scenic spot but it definitely needs some attention with regards to upkeep and repair. The building was in complete ruins and the grounds were covered in high grass and not maintained. A...  more »
  • Not much here. We did the horseback riding through the area. It was very enjoyable and the kind of cool to ride around this old fort area.  more »
  • A site quite hard to find but interesting even if it is not maintained enough and would really require a renovation that could make it very interesting. There is a restaurant on site and around as well as a beautiful beach.

  • The fort itself of the Fort James area has been terribly neglected, and the ruins are degrading at a rapid pace. Still it's a place where it's historical significance can be realised, by observing the panoramic view from the site, and the weathering relics.
  • Fab views of the northern part of the island. Able to watch the cruise ships from here. Would have got five stars if it wasn't for the rubbish every where.
  • Nice fort, the ruins are not enormous, but quite a site, and they let.you imagine what it must have been. It's nice to take a walk through. The beach of St James right next door is beautiful, and definitely worth an afternoon in the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean.
  • One of the many best beach to hang. Magnificent sunsets view...
  • This wonderful historical site deserves your visit, although it’s been left aside by the authorities and becoming in ruins. Unfortunately part of the local history and culture is being forgotten. Antigua is much more than wonderful sunset and warm sea. Those who come here maybe interested in the local history as well.
