Fort James, St. John's

3.5
#3 of 12 in Historic Sites in Antigua and Barbuda
Built during the 18th century to guard the city from a possible French invasion, Fort James offers a glimpse into the past as well as sweeping views of the surrounding harbor. Although it was once armed with 36 cannons and a barracks accommodating 75 men, today the citadel has dwindled to a handful of cannons, a power magazine, the ruins of old buildings, and the foundation walls. Due to lack of maintenance, grass grows quite liberally throughout the grounds. Still, you can enjoy views over the bay and combine a visit here with a swim or stroll along the nearby beach. • Take a local taxi tour... Don't buy through a cruise... Help out the locals, they're friendly and they're reasonable and they can use your business!!!
  • This place was shown in brochures and looked very interesting and maybe because it was low season during our visit, the place was in shambles with over grown grass all over the observation points and cannons, and we guessed because it's isolation, is used at night for "love" and night activities because some areas were littered with condom wrappers... it is a shame because is a beautiful place
  • Unfortunately, the government nor anyone else are doing anything to maintain this important historical site. Worth a one hour visit to see the beautiful British canons still facing out to sea where they were originally sited to protect the harbour of St. John.
  • Good beach and bar with acceptable food. Fort not all that interesting
  • Can be allot better have endless opportunity
