Fort James, St. John's

3.5
#3 of 9 in Historic Sites in Antigua and Barbuda
Built during the 18th century to guard the city from a possible French invasion, Fort James offers a glimpse into the past as well as sweeping views of the surrounding harbor. Although it was once armed with 36 cannons and a barracks accommodating 75 men, today the citadel has dwindled to a handful of cannons, a power magazine, the ruins of old buildings, and the foundation walls. Due to lack of maintenance, grass grows quite liberally throughout the grounds. Still, you can enjoy views over the bay and combine a visit here with a swim or stroll along the nearby beach. • Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and shared interesting details about this landmark. We looked around at the ruins and Karim explained what would have happened there.  more »
  • I really love these older forts from the 1400's and 1500's, with all their charm and authenticity. If you like this one, try to make it to the Puerto Rico one as well.  more »
  • Fort James guarded the port of St John’s but sadly this important piece of island history is in need of restoration. With some local government effort this fort could be a great draw for tourist. Even...  more »

  • This place was shown in brochures and looked very interesting and maybe because it was low season during our visit, the place was in shambles with over grown grass all over the observation points and cannons, and we guessed because it's isolation, is used at night for "love" and night activities because some areas were littered with condom wrappers... it is a shame because is a beautiful place
  • Unfortunately, the government nor anyone else are doing anything to maintain this important historical site. Worth a one hour visit to see the beautiful British canons still facing out to sea where they were originally sited to protect the harbour of St. John.
  • Can be allot better have endless opportunity
  • This is a review of Fort James, not the Fort James Beach, Rusells Fort James or the many businesses activities on or surrounding the Historic Fort. The well preserved Historical Fort is indeed a worthy and quite interesting place to visit and enjoy. Positioned at the entrance of the St. John's Harbour with awesome panoramic views of the City and environs is one Antigua's premiere point of interest. The Fort overlooks the Deep Water Harbour, Perry Bay Quay, The Royal Antiguan Hotel to name a few and also provides great photographic options. Having more Canon Ball Guns than most other Forts I have Visited Locally and Regionally is another of the unique attractions of Fort James. Famous by day and indeed by night (Ehem!:) this Fort remains an interesting place.
  • Overgrown and not maintained, but interesting historical location. Great ocean and bay views.
