Fort James, St. John's

(3.6/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
Built during the 18th century to guard the city from a possible French invasion, Fort James offers a glimpse into the past as well as sweeping views of the surrounding harbor. Although it was once armed with 36 cannons and a barracks accommodating 75 men, today the citadel has dwindled to a handful of cannons, a power magazine, the ruins of old buildings, and the foundation walls. Due to lack of maintenance, grass grows quite liberally throughout the grounds. Still, you can enjoy views over the bay and combine a visit here with a swim or stroll along the nearby beach. Add Fort James and other attractions to your St. John's trip itinerary using our St. John's vacation route planner.

  • Antiguans are not mantaining the ruins of this fort and it is falling apart. It is amazing though, the good state of the canyons. A lot of history lost in this fortification
  • Easily accessible (we drove straight up and in) and ample places to park. The ruins have an eerie but tranquil atmosphere and lots to see (views, buildings, cannons) and explore. Free to enter and park.
  • Great scenery, wonderful for sunsets.
  • Free, wild, enjoyable hike!
  • Fort James near St. John's, Antigua, dates from 1739. Admission is free.
