Fort James, St. John's

3.6
#3 of 13 in Historic Sites in Antigua and Barbuda
Built during the 18th century to guard the city from a possible French invasion, Fort James offers a glimpse into the past as well as sweeping views of the surrounding harbor. Although it was once armed with 36 cannons and a barracks accommodating 75 men, today the citadel has dwindled to a handful of cannons, a power magazine, the ruins of old buildings, and the foundation walls. Due to lack of maintenance, grass grows quite liberally throughout the grounds. Still, you can enjoy views over the bay and combine a visit here with a swim or stroll along the nearby beach. • Nice area especially for visitors who want to come with a group of friends and family. The beach is nice and clear which is perfect for persons in Saint John's who don't want to drive outside the city for the popular beaches. Lots of sand space for BBQ's and picnics as well as access to bars and eats.
  • The fort is in a significant state of disrepair and there is a fair amount of trash inside the fort itself. It is not maintained as a historical park at all, which is unfortunate because it's still pretty interesting to look around even though there is no signage to explain what you are seeing. There are 6+ cannons in the fort that are in surprisingly good condition considering they are around 200 years old. It is worth a half hour stop to look around. If nothing else, Fort James Beach is just to the north of the fort area. You'll drive past the beaches on your way to the fort.
  • This place was shown in brochures and looked very interesting and maybe because it was low season during our visit, the place was in shambles with over grown grass all over the observation points and cannons, and we guessed because it's isolation, is used at night for "love" and night activities because some areas were littered with condom wrappers... it is a shame because is a beautiful place
  • Take a local taxi tour... Don't buy through a cruise... Help out the locals, they're friendly and they're reasonable and they can use your business!!!
  • Great place to visit with some fantastic routes
