National Slavery Museum, Luanda

1.0
Explore a modest monument commemorating the suffering inflicted upon the Angolan people at National Slavery Museum. Located in a two-story colonial building once used for processing and transferring slaves, the museum overlooking the ocean contains a chapel with adjacent rooms. Examine the site where millions of slaves were baptized and later exported to Portuguese colonies in America. As you enter the structure, you can inspect a small collection of mostly photographic memorabilia; to learn more about the site, ask the staff members to fill in the context with historical facts. • The estate is very real. It is recommended to all who live or visit Angola. Is not too large, but portrays without major rodeos the past of slavery.

  • A small house with three rooms. Pay nothing at the entrance, is open and free to the public. A 'guide' came to tell us the story, but he said less than the explanations on the walls, only in Portuguese. We came back to the signs on the walls. Various explanations. Short and rather well done and informative, I learned a lot. 20-30' tour. Nice view in bonus.

  • One hour south of Luanda when traffic is light. Not a big place but good history. All in Portuguese. Benefica crafts and art market is here also. Beautiful views of bay and back to city.  more »

Where to stay in Luanda

Luanda holds the title as one of the most expensive cities in the world, so even if you search for budget-friendly accommodations, bear in mind that it will cost a fair amount. Most recommend the neighborhood of Maculusso for three-, four-, and five-star hotels, but you can also see what Murtala Mohammed Avenue near Luanda Bay has to offer. All lodgings in the center make excellent starting points for exploring the rest of Luanda--just remember to confine your sightseeing to the city's safer colonial part.
