Kalandula Falls, Kalandula

#2 of 6 in Nature in Angola
Reach the edge of a quarry cliff to photograph an example of nature's wrath and beauty at Kalandula Falls. Regarded as Africa's largest waterfall by volume, it measures 105 m (344 ft) in height and 400 m (1,300 ft) in width. To reach the sightseeing spots, you have to follow certain pathways and directions through the rocky landscape, but bear in mind that some access bridges were have been destroyed in war. As you reach the site, notice how the waterfall fed by seasonal rains forms a horseshoe shape, which continues to retract due to water's relentless erosive power. You can also hire a local to help you reach the bottom of the falls. Work out when and for how long to visit Kalandula Falls and other Kalandula attractions using our handy Kalandula journey planner.

  • Look of Kalandula (or falls of Kalandula) is currently well known to visitors and tourists. Located in the hometown of my grandfather, former labourer of the Luanda/Malanje railway line. I go once in a while relax me and contemplate the wonders of nature. I wanted to share with you something new, something that a lot of tourists do not, either because they do not (local lack of tourism agency), or because they do not have the time: it is called "Mundele Kinkolo" climbing which means say in Kimbundu language 'White Mountain '. Me I prefer to call 'white climbing. " It's a wild way which allows access to the low level of the River to watch the falls of down to the level of the Lucala River. It is thanks to young people in the region who improvised guides by fault of the Government of the Province (I draw your attention to the risk [of accidents]). It is a small path that lies 300 meters before the falls. Ask the young people mentioned above. This is the first time I took this path. Trusting my small physical shape and having a fierce desire to see something else, so I followed insistent young people. The descent is made up of a slope of approximately ~ 40 percent (at random) on a wild road, a place full of mud and without taking to stand in a fall slide. My luck has been that of having to type commando sole shoes. The descent took us about 45 minutes (youth announce it 10 minutes) probably to blame, the ancestor of the band. The climb took us more than an hour. I wasn't prepared, even though I'm a great Walker. Downstairs is a marvel take a break at the place where the SOBA (Chief) made all the weekend a procession/ceremony with his flock on the water. Gaze at the falls from below. Enjoy the purity of fresh water and the calm of nature. It is a wonder. To get there, have a good physical preparation (don't be like me). Several tourists will have vanished and with serious injuries. Beware, there is fire or emergency services. It is at your own risk. Travel cost: 5,000 Kz for apprentices guides.
