National History Museum, Tirana

3.9
#1 of 15 in Museums in Albania
Albania's largest museum, National History Museum has seven pavilions of exhibits. You'll spot the attraction by the large mosaic above the front entrance called "The Albanians." Each pavilion showcases a different period in Albania's history from antiquity to communism. In the antiquity pavilion you'll see objects from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including tools from daily life, coins, and base reliefs. As you move forward in time, the exhibits get more political, celebrating Albanian independence and decrying abuses from outside nations. Beyond the socio-political history, there is also an iconography exhibit with notable works by local artists and a large exhibit sharing Albania's story from World War II. Call ahead to book a guided tour to fit your schedule; for a self-guided tour buy tickets at the reception desk. • A little confused transition museum rooms and times. Some rooms still have no translations into English which makes them noticeable for a foreigner.

  • We visited in August with an infernal heat and in the Museum lacked an air conditioning system. all visitors were exhausted and disappointed. Unfortunately the captions were all in Albanian, so incomprehensible to foreign tourist! It's a shame because it would have had much to teach about the history of this nation!

  • It was translated and the history artifacts are pretty cool. Skenderberg was a total badass with a hugeass sword, might as well been Cloud Strife
  • A moderate museum. But if you are in Tirana, you should see it.
  • The best place in Albania to find out more about the country's history
  • Very well done covering prehistory from 40000 BC to overthrow of repressive government. Lots of maps to help understand the periods. Some of explanation is in English. We took a guide which was very helpful with explanations. Some gold jewelry and hoarded coins. Rare funeral cloth like tapestry. Entire room dedicated to victims of Communist era. Nice gift shop with some books in English and made by hand one of a kind jewelry. Very reasonable, take euro dollar and lek but no credit card.
  • A museum of all Albanian region... the wallpainting on the entrance is unique...

Where to stay in Tirana

All areas of Tirana boast accommodation at various price points. Hostels and hotels housed in Communist buildings dot the city center and immediate surroundings. As with the rest of Albania, prices here are generally low, and you can find even better deals as you move away from the city center. The tourism industry is fairly new in Tirana and the country as a whole, but you’ll be welcomed warmly by hospitable staff eager to show off their freshly post-Communist nation.
