National History Museum, Tirana

(4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Albania's largest museum, National History Museum has seven pavilions of exhibits. You'll spot the attraction by the large mosaic above the front entrance called "The Albanians." Each pavilion showcases a different period in Albania's history from antiquity to communism. In the antiquity pavilion you'll see objects from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including tools from daily life, coins, and base reliefs. As you move forward in time, the exhibits get more political, celebrating Albanian independence and decrying abuses from outside nations. Beyond the socio-political history, there is also an iconography exhibit with notable works by local artists and a large exhibit sharing Albania's story from World War II. • In the middle of Tirane is the National Museum, where you can find and learn interesting things about Albanian and European History. I enjoyed it!
  • The archaeological part until the beginning of middle age is pretty well put together with a good timeline, beautiful pieces including the head of Apollo of Butrint. The rest is rather of the nationalist propaganda of history! If you visit during the Skanderbeg square, the entrance is at the rear of the Museum via the Boulevard Zogu i pare. L "entry costs 200lek."

  • It's well worth a visit with a reasonable amount of Translation of signs into English though never a lot of detail about the artefact in itself or in terms of its historical significance. The Illyrian...  more »

  • Very well done covering prehistory from 40000 BC to overthrow of repressive government. Lots of maps to help understand the periods. Some of explanation is in English. We took a guide which was very helpful with explanations. Some gold jewelry and hoarded coins. Rare funeral cloth like tapestry. Entire room dedicated to victims of Communist era. Nice gift shop with some books in English and made by hand one of a kind jewelry. Very reasonable, take euro dollar and lek but no credit card.
  • I was very disappointed. Only part of the exhibition is described in english. I was very much intrested in the Sowjet history of Albania but there was only a small area only described in Albanian. The higher the floor the higher the temperature! If you go in summer bring at least some water and plan to have a shower after. Despite all that there are some nice pieces to see and the ancient times are described in English quite well... For the WWII part I had the feeling it was not so much objective but more heroing Albanians.
  • A truly beautiful experience to learn about Albanian culture and history. A simply must visit for all tourists passing or staying in Albania.
  • If you can't read albanian you won't understand most parts of the exhibition. The latest parts of albanian history after WWII aren't described.
  • Very interesting representation of Albanian's history. The boy at the museum was even so nice to illustrate us the whole first floor (prehistoric findings).
