National Gallery of Art, Tirana

4.0
#4 of 10 in Museums in Tirana
Develop your taste for Socialist Realism at National Gallery of Art. The gallery's two floors showcase international works of art, but the highlight is the local communist-era propaganda. Although used to promote political ideology, each piece has artistic value, making the exhibit both an exploration in art and history. The Social Realism movement dominated art behind the Iron Curtain for many years, representating of the values of that period. The museum is small, so take your time investigating each piece of artwork. Purchase your tickets from the reception when you arrive. • I don't understand the No Photos policies of most museums. People travel 1000's of miles/kilometers and have no hard proof. The exhabits were interesting and I'm glad I visited.  more »
  • A short walk from the city's main Skanderbeg square. That it was not he, had exhibited Albania contemporary art and art of the Socialist era.

  • We knew this museum would include a lot of Social Realism but I also expected art from before communism and after 1990. As it was it was really almost only propaganda art. Some stunning pictures.  more »

  • Nice selection of classic art and the temporary exhibit was really cool. However, there is little to no context or descriptions available in English - There is a free app that is advertised to guide you through certain pieces, but the wifi doesn't work in the gallery. Also, the staff wasn't particularly helpful: The bathrooms weren't working(?) in the gallery and no suggestions were offered on where else might be available, they chatted rather loudly as we wandered the exhibits.
  • No photos are allowed. It's a nice gallery however it's not air conditioned.
  • Love it! Just wish the opening hours weren't so random and constantly changing! Worth going round the back to see the giant communist era statues literally stored outside!
  • Check the socialism-realism art painting very attractive and unique
  • No photo allowed its not good

Where to stay in Tirana

All areas of Tirana boast accommodation at various price points. Hostels and hotels housed in Communist buildings dot the city center and immediate surroundings. As with the rest of Albania, prices here are generally low, and you can find even better deals as you move away from the city center. The tourism industry is fairly new in Tirana and the country as a whole, but you’ll be welcomed warmly by hospitable staff eager to show off their freshly post-Communist nation.
