Butrint, Saranda

4.6
See the remains of an ancient Greek and Roman city at Butrint. The ruined city thrived until late antiquity when it began to decline, but it wasn't abandoned until the Middle Ages. Located on a hill near the sea, the ruins continued to play a part in the region's history even after its demise as different groups took power, such as the Venetians and the French. Constant excavations have taken place since 1928. Local preservationists worked hard to protect the site from looters and violence, and in 2005 UNESCO declared that the site was out of danger. You can reach the ruins and view the archeological work by using the road leading directly there from Saranda. The attraction is located in Butrint National Park, so consider combining the two and spending a day exploring the park. • Be careful when you go there. It is becoming popular, so herds of tourists come and go, and if you want to take nice photos, I recommend you to go either in the morning or in the afternoon. Also the s...  more »
  • Archaeological site nice, interesting and well maintained. Alma, great guide, in Italian guided me in its long history, in Exchange for a free offer. Really nothing to envy in Italian or Greek sites

  • This Park, well maintained, collects some remnants of a city that depart from the 10th century BC (fortress, Sanctuary, walls and a theater) until a Venetian tower and a small Fortress (Venetian castle that houses the small but very interesting Museum) of about 1400. Some Roman about 100bc "restructuring" (the baths and villa) turns to walk away with a guided well sign posted with signs. some views from the "porta del lago" and the Venetian castle garden deserve some pictures. the cost to entry is 500 leke (consider changing 130 leke = 1 euro) per head for adults, children free of charge, within the Park would have preferred of the keepers to leave the tourists free to scramble or climb the monuments or ruins. Parking is really under sized, so arm yourself with patience. We went out at 18.00 and it took us about an hour and twenty minutes doing very, very calm, the sunset makes some spectacular views. Ask for the guide in Italian, there is not always, or are you looking into the internet each area open to visitors of the Park, so you can read what you are seeing, the map that you find at the beginning is really small descriptive level. To the question "this place or this task has a bar?" I answered you, but actually inside the park there is a tiny market of local products and the ability to purchase water, soft drinks and ice cream. so not a real Bar.

Where to stay in Saranda

Albania’s best-known seaside city, Saranda caters to tourists with accommodations clustered along the waterfront, which is exactly where you’ll want to be too. Resort hotels line the shore, offering views of the sea and Greece across the water. Albania remains a pretty cheap tourist destination, but the cost of a seaside room falls in the more expensive range. Head farther back from the beach to find lower-budget hostels, still within walking distance to the water.
