Butrint, Saranda

(4.7/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
See the remains of an ancient Greek and Roman city at Butrint. The ruined city thrived until late antiquity when it began to decline, but it wasn't abandoned until the Middle Ages. Located on a hill near the sea, the ruins continued to play a part in the region's history even after its demise as different groups took power, such as the Venetians and the French. Constant excavations have taken place since 1928. Local preservationists worked hard to protect the site from looters and violence, and in 2005 UNESCO declared that the site was out of danger. You can reach the ruins and view the archeological work by using the road leading directly there from Saranda. The attraction is located in Butrint National Park, so consider combining the two and spending a day exploring the park. Butrint is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Saranda Edition.

  • Butrint is a town in Albania located a few kilometers from the Greek border, on the Adriatic coast. Founded by the Chaoniens, the town was romanized as soon as the middle of the 2nd century BC and renamed Buthrotum. The ancient city can be visited in the shade, under a forest of Oaks and eucalyptus. Among the ruins of the sanctuary of Asklepios, is a charming, theatre on water. Its small size have sometimes led to wrong to consider him as an odeon. Part of the bleachers built in blocks of cut stones date from the second century BC, while the stage building, where has been used mortar, is a Roman reconstruction of the beginning of the 2nd century AD. The building relies for part directly on the rock and is surrounded by a hundred feet long retaining wall (28, 50 m). The seats in the front row are carved lion legs.

  • Butrint is an archaeological site whose megalithic city walls date from 1000 BC. The city and it's setting emerge magically from the Lake and Mountains of Butrint National Park, and some say the city's founders were the descendants of Andromache, wife of Priam of Troy. Indeed the Trojan Gate entrance to the city evokes dreams of that great city before it fell to the Macedonians. After ten visits to Butrint, I have still not explored all of the site and it's national park, and each time I return, it is as if Troy is calling to me, working mysteriously to transport me back to an epoch of legend made true in Butrint.
  • Fascinating to tour this ancient city. If you are in Albania definitely check it out! Admission is only $5 and there is a lot to see.
  • Awesome place. Must-visit if you are in Albania. Reflects the entire history of the country from ancient times to today.
  • Really nice place, must see when going around.
  • One of the best history lesson you can get if you visit Albania.Don't hesitate to come to Butrint, as you can see one of the most amazing rise and fall of a Roman town during different ages. The view is also amazing, and at the end/beginning of the day you can take a bath in Ksamil which is 6-7 km away.
