Blue Eye (Syri Kalter), Saranda

4.3
#1 of 48 in Parks in Albania
A natural spring, the true depth of the Blue Eye (Syri Kalter) has yet to be measured. The pool is the source of the Bistricë River which flows to the Ionian Sea. The clear, electric blue water gets its color from minerals pushed up from the bottom of the pool, in contrast to the greens and browns of the land around. Climb the metal platform above the water, from where you can look down on the lake. Enjoy a refreshment at the cafe's dock over the pool. The road to the attraction is rough, so use caution with rental cars. • It is a very interesting place, with a very big spring, that goes from zero to a full river in a few meters. The acces is not so nice because the road is quite bad, if you have the option to go with a...  more »

  • Was expecting me, walked out on foot. However swarms of cars are purely left, here so that the way to the blue eye rather resembles a dust migration. Once there, everything pretty Albanian. Stands on two large posters, don't swim! And what was, you might not enjoy the faint blue, either people from the observation deck get jumped or they were going into the water and made photo session. That restaurant is a disaster, we wanted to buy something to drink and have been driven only. Peaceful rest is not possible. Everyone wants to pull over with his big SUV even closer. The whole thing would have to be closed for the traffic a kind of National Park. Go extra not worth it at all!

  • Excellent scenery, unfortunately diving is not allowed. There are two restaurants in the area where you can eat and two spings where you can fill up with water. Getting there by car is quite bumpy but doable.
  • Slightly disappointing as swimming is prohibited (though plenty of lousy tourists do it anyway) and it is a very tiny area. Completely overcrowded and hectic which sort of takes away from the natural beauty of it.
  • Crystal clear water, amazing view 😍
  • Amazing! The clearest natural water you will ever see The water is super cold, so great for a refreshing dive om a hot summer day.
  • Perfectly blue. Perfectly clean. Perfectly cold :) Worth seeing!

Where to stay in Saranda

Albania’s best-known seaside city, Saranda caters to tourists with accommodations clustered along the waterfront, which is exactly where you’ll want to be too. Resort hotels line the shore, offering views of the sea and Greece across the water. Albania remains a pretty cheap tourist destination, but the cost of a seaside room falls in the more expensive range. Head farther back from the beach to find lower-budget hostels, still within walking distance to the water.
