Voskopoje Village, Korce

(4.5/5 based on 65 reviews on the web)
Visit what was once one of the Balkan's thriving centers of education and religion at Voskopoje Village. Known for having more churches than inhabitants, what is left of the town is a collection of Orthodox churches with floor-to-ceiling frescoes and murals that share the stories of saints. The best-preserved churches in the village are Saint Nicholas, the church of the Virgin, Saint Athanasius, the Prophet Elias, and Saint Michael. Finding the man with the key to unlock both the Saint Nicholas and church of the Virgin for you may be an adventure in and of itself. Ask for the keeper of the keys at Taverna Voskopoja in the center of the village. The other churches usually stay open, but some ask for an entrance fee. After your church tour, try a plate of traditional food at a nearby restaurant and enjoy a walk around the mountain location for views.
