Zekate House, Gjirokaster

4.5
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Gjirokaster County
An intact Ottoman tower house, Zekate House is an example of a combination of Turkish and Albanian design sensibilities. You must request access to the house at the tourist office in the center of town, and be sure to ask for information on the attraction in English. A neighbor next door to the attraction keeps the key and lets you into the space. On the ground floor is a kitchen and a cistern. Take the central staircase to the family rooms and the third-floor reception room. The latter is covered in frescoes from ceiling to floor and lined with sofas in traditional Balkan style. Most of the mansions of Gjirokastra are privately owned, and many of them are managed by the descendants of those noble families that long ago built these houses-fortresses. Zeko family, whose name the House is still in the XIX century was one of the richest families of the city. The House was built by a family in 1811-1812, but when the Communists (in the 40-ies of XX century) it was nationalized, and the owners were resettled in outbuilding formerly used as housing for workers. After the fall of the House has been returned to the original owners and is again in the hands of heirs, Zeko kind. Zekate family home is one of the most interesting Ottoman mansions in Gjirokastra, a classic example of Ottoman urban architecture. ...
