Zekate House, Gjirokaster

4.6
#4 of 6 in Sightseeing in Gjirokaster County
Historic Site Tourist Spot
An intact Ottoman tower house, Zekate House is an example of a combination of Turkish and Albanian design sensibilities. You must request access to the house at the tourist office in the center of town, and be sure to ask for information on the attraction in English. A neighbor next door to the attraction keeps the key and lets you into the space. On the ground floor is a kitchen and a cistern. Take the central staircase to the family rooms and the third-floor reception room. The latter is covered in frescoes from ceiling to floor and lined with sofas in traditional Balkan style. Make Zekate House a centerpiece of your Gjirokaster vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Gjirokaster vacation generator.

Where to stay in Gjirokaster

As a World Heritage Site, Gjirokaster attracts a fair number of tourists. However, there are a limited number of hotels, and even fewer hostels. The town is divided into two sections: the atmospheric old town is up on a hill, and the newer part is down below in the valley. Most of the historical attractions lie in the old town; staying here puts you within easy reach and saves you a daily walk or taxi ride up and down the hill.
