Apollonia, Fier
(4.5/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Wander the ruins of ancient significance at Apollonia. Founded first by the Taulanti Albanians, and then by the Greek colonists in 588 BCE, the city was founded again in the 18th century. International teams continue to excavate antiquities from the attraction's grounds, including a large collection of Roman statuary. Emperor Augustus himself studied in the ancient city. In fact, the town thrived under Roman rule and Cicero mentioned it as a great city in his writings. After its devastation by an earthquake, the city is making a comeback as a major tourist attraction. A Byzantine monastery with a rustic interior is also on site, and you are welcome to tour the inside. Purchase tickets at the museum, which serves as your introduction to the site's history. There is a lot of ground to cover, so wear comfortable shoes. There are facilities inside the museum. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Fier holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Apollonia and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Unfortunately we arrived late afternoon and we were not able to see it all and well. Excavations have still need much work, in fact if we consider that was inhabited by 60,000 inhabitants, its extension should be much more than is visible. Not to be missed, because beautiful, is the adjacent church of Santa Maria of the 14th century.

  • Appolonia is an archaeological highlight of Albania. The journey is really rough, but will be better in the future - because all construction site. Construction site is Shën Meri, which is located right at the entrance and next to the picturesque Museum around the monastery. Unfortunately, in the late 1990s was plundered much, one notices also. There's beer in the restaurant.

  • The ancient city of Apollonia is only initially dug out. Theatre and Forum are in very good condition. The Museum offers beautiful antique sculptures. The Church was unfortunately not available due to renovations.

  • Very nice place to visit. Not far from Vlore
  • Nice stories about a great old city.
  • Apollonia is archaeological site situated 30 km away from Vlora, 12km away from the city of Fier, near Pojan village, about 10 km away from the Adriatic coast. The archaeological site of Apollonia includes the associated group of structures with original remains from various civilizations, such as Illyrian, Greek, Roman and Medieval. Visit and Enjoy. *****
