Apollonia, Fier

(4.5/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Wander the ruins of ancient significance at Apollonia. Founded first by the Taulanti Albanians, and then by the Greek colonists in 588 BCE, the city was founded again in the 18th century. International teams continue to excavate antiquities from the attraction's grounds, including a large collection of Roman statuary. Emperor Augustus himself studied in the ancient city. In fact, the town thrived under Roman rule and Cicero mentioned it as a great city in his writings. After its devastation by an earthquake, the city is making a comeback as a major tourist attraction. A Byzantine monastery with a rustic interior is also on site, and you are welcome to tour the inside. Purchase tickets at the museum, which serves as your introduction to the site's history. There is a lot of ground to cover, so wear comfortable shoes. There are facilities inside the museum. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Fier holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Apollonia and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • A stop on our mini tour included Apollonia, archeological site that tells a piece of the history of this country, beautiful Monastery with the Orthodox Church. From the recent past this country has recovered the archaeological works that until the fall of the regime have had an unhappy period as compared to other countries where we find them more manicured. To clarify that the Albania after the fall of the regime are managing tourism democratically and that the recent past see the war of the years 90 led them to very low economic level and that in these years are slowly recovering by investing on tourism (I am 15 years working on this sector) in order to make investments and recover works of art during the Socialist regime have been defaced by obscurantism.

  • Very nice place to visit. Not far from Vlore
  • Nice stories about a great old city.
  • Apollonia is archaeological site situated 30 km away from Vlora, 12km away from the city of Fier, near Pojan village, about 10 km away from the Adriatic coast. The archaeological site of Apollonia includes the associated group of structures with original remains from various civilizations, such as Illyrian, Greek, Roman and Medieval. Visit and Enjoy. *****
