Berat Fortress, Berat

(4.4/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Take a self-guided tour around the 13th-century remains of Berat Fortress. Located on the banks of the Osum River, the fortress overlooks the town of Berat. The Romans burned the original fort, which has been rebuilt many times since. The haunting ruins cover a large area and, in the castle's glory days, were able to hold a large number of the city's residents. Many of these buildings were Christian churches from the 13th century, with one mosque whose minaret base still stands. You may be carrying the fortress in your pocket: the attraction appears on the back of Albanian 10 lekë coins put in circulation in 1996 and 2000. Our Berat vacation planner makes visiting Berat Fortress and other Berat attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Hi, I visited the castle of Berat in January 2017. It was really cold but magical. The smell of wood burning stoves, the silence and the snowy mountains. Magical. I arrived by bus from Tirana (400lek, just over 3 euros). The bus station is just outside the lower town, from there you have two options to get to the Fort: by taxi, with 500lek ... less than 4 EUR, or by an enjoyable walk of 20 minutes. The Fort is open in low season you do not pay the entrance. I am staying in a small guesthouse in the Castle (highly recommended). Try to Toni, a local guide who can open the doors of the churches. one is beautiful. Take your time and explore the Castle slowly. Recommended

  • Berat is a quaint town with its whitewashed houses that the Hill descend towards the main road. Interesting point to see this special feature is the bridge where you can make some interesting photos. You can see the Castle and the Museum within it, we did it with the Guide and I highly recommend when visiting a particular town and its works of art to have a guide that explains the meaning of what you see
