Berat Fortress, Berat

4.5
#1 of 13 in Things to do in Berat
Take a self-guided tour around the 13th-century remains of Berat Fortress. Located on the banks of the Osum River, the fortress overlooks the town of Berat. The Romans burned the original fort, which has been rebuilt many times since. The haunting ruins cover a large area and, in the castle's glory days, were able to hold a large number of the city's residents. Many of these buildings were Christian churches from the 13th century, with one mosque whose minaret base still stands. You may be carrying the fortress in your pocket: the attraction appears on the back of Albanian 10 lekë coins put in circulation in 1996 and 2000. Where to stay in Berat

Berat doesn’t experience a large number of tourists, as reflected in the limited accommodation choices. Still, you can find inexpensive hostels and higher-end hotels in decent locations. The town’s main attraction is the well-preserved Ottoman center, and no matter where you stay, you won’t be a far walk. Be prepared to conquer some hills, though: Berat's hub lies in the valley between two steep hills, where most of the accommodations are.
