National Museum of Afghanistan, Kabul

#3 of 11 in Things to do in Kabul
See what remains of National Museum of Afghanistan, a two-story 1919 building telling the story of Afghanistan’s complex and intricate past. Once the most important cultural institution in Central Asia, having boasted over 100,000 artifacts spanning several millennia, the museum was savagely looted during recent wars. With a large number of Buddhist artifacts and a collection of Hindu scriptures having survived the looting, the museum still shows the unparalleled richness of the region’s history. Admire the excellent collection of pre-Muslim heritage, including Mesopotamian artifacts, Chinese mining relics, and 1920s railway engines in the courtyard. Lying some 9 km (5.5 mi) southwest of downtown Kabul, the museum caters perfectly to history and culture buffs. • The first museum in Afghanistan was established in 1919 at the Bagh-i-Bala palace overlooking Kabul, and consisted of manuscripts, miniatures, weapons and art objects belonging to the former royal families. A few years later the collection was moved to the king's palace in the ceter of the city and in 1931 it was officially installed in the present building, which had served as the Municipality. The original collection was dramatically enriched, beginning in 1922, by the first excavations of the Delegation Archeologique Francaise en Afghanistan (DAFA). Through the years other archaeological delegations have added their finds to the museum until today the collection spans fifty millenniums Prehistoric, Classical, Buddhist, hindu and Islamic and stands as one of the greatest testimonies of antiquity that the world has inherited.
  • It worths visiting, you will get knowledge about our ancient people, how they used to live, their clothings, which kind of vehicles they used for transporation, which kind of weapons they used in the wars, their jwelleries, different kinds of statues, photos from beautiful and ancient places of Afghanistan and many more.
  • Debtor security concerns, you have go through impolite police staff. No restaurants or cafe to take a break in. Right in front of it, an unofficial bus stop, which makes it jammed at all times during the days.
  • A place to make yourself more familiar with the history and cultures of Afghanistan.
  • It really needs plenty of work, staff and improvement to look like a real museum.
